RSS feeds for Individual Categories in Wordpress
December 29th, 2007
After reading an article about blogging at what it originally was meant to be I decided to follow some of the “rules of blogging”. One of these is that you provide a weekly list of interesting links. I modified it slightly insofar as I am going to include my favorite lolcat picture of the week as I find them really funny.
Unfortunately I am subscribed to PlanetILUG a site which gathers Linux related blogs from Ireland and some of the people subscribed didn’t want to see this images each week.
So the solution was to create a feed for my Linux category only so that they will only see Linux related stuff from my website and nothing else. And as it turns out it was really easy!
All you have to do is is add &cat=n (where n is your category number) to your existing feed URL.
http://domainname.com/?feed=rss2&cat=n
Alternatively if you are using custom URLs you can simply click on the category and add the word feed to the URL.
http://domainname.com/category/maincategory/subcategory/feed
http://domainname.com/index.php/category/maincategory/feed
So now I can target different catergories of my site to different people.

how unfriendly of them! I think a bit of larting is needed…
I am subscribed to both planetIlug and icanhascheeseburger, so I get the best of both worlds. personally, I enjoyed seeing your best-of. I’d seen it before, but it’s great to see other people enjoy that stuff as well.

“Larting”, eh? :D Obviously a fellow BOFH fan. Ah I don’t mind I’m only blogging for the craic I don’t want to offend or annoy anyone. But since you also subscribe and you enjoyed it it’s 1 for 1 now.
I guess we need another planetILUG subscriber to tip the vote.
Still at least it allowed me to play with the blog a little. I can think of a few uses for individual category rss feeds.

like BOFH? he’s my role-model! Been reading his stories since the 20th century. I miss those old days.
wouldn’t worry about a single person complaining. planetilug is not about Linux - it’s about Linux /Users/ - crucial difference.
I got a complaint once on my own site when I posted about my kids. The complainant somehow thought that because I usually write techie web-dev stuff, that’s all I should ever write. Screw that.
I notice that planet KDE has a load of stuff about Aaron Seigo’s kid, and planet Kernel is also full of personal stuff. Don’t worry about it.

Fair enough. But I think I’ll leave it as is (just submitting Linux stuff to PlanetILUG). I can use it as an opportunity to start posting more Linux releated stuff.
Thanks for the support though Kae.
