Success M1530
April 18th, 2008
Just got all of my hardware working on my new laptop under KUbuntu, fingerprint reader logins, Webcam, sound, media buttons, remote control, microphone everything. Also stopped the dreaded media button from overwriting Grub everytime it’s pressed.
I am disappointed that the sepakers and the microphone on the laptop are such terrible quality, especially for a “multimedia” laptop.
I’ll post the steps I took to get everything working as soon as possible. But when KUbuntu comes out in a few days with KDE4 I don’t know how much will be relevant. Maybe I’ll just wait until then.

KDE4 sucks ass! Do not use it unless you have a screen res of about 1400+. That and the menus disappear and reappear randomly AND what were they thinking with vista/xp like start menu, packing it all in so now I have to hover over shit for a second or two to access my programs. That was my experience last week right before I removed it again!

I agree with brimur! I tried KDE4 a few weeks ago via a live cd that came with Linux Format and I was unimpressed, though there is potential(especially with the increased speed of the new QT)..
Gnome/Xfce are still the way to go IMO regardless of what Sir Torvalds says.

Yeah it’s seems you guys are right. It looks nice and I think it has potential but I couldn’t live with it for more than a week. All of the KDE apps I use (i.e. amaroK) aren’t fully integrated into it and it just seems clunky.
It does look nice though but since the new KUbuntu with KDE3 has Compiz by default I think I’ll just stick to using that.

Just a question, do you run VMware workstation on the laptop at all? I ask as I am looking for a laptop to run VMs on for study purposed and the like. Other than reading the specs an owners opinion is quite useful :-)
Thanks

I do run VMware on it. No problems with it at all. With the dual core processor it’s pretty quick. I’d recommend it for running VMware.
On a side note though the speakers are so bad they are unusable. So if you want to watch movies or even listen the music while you work don’t get this laptop. You have to turn the volume up over 50% before you even hear it.
