Disabled Pop Up Image

I had to disable the pop up images on the main page as they were messing with Internet Explorer. Every time you tried to access the main page you got an error saying that Internet Explorer could not open the page. Even though it clearly opened in the background. I am not sure why that happened as it works fine in the Gallery section and also in Firefox, Opera etc.

I think there is a patch out there to fix IE but I can’t really expect everyone to install that just to view my site. So I’ve disabled pop up images. Which is a pity because I really liked them. Ah well, maybe if I can spend a little time looking into it I might find a workaround.

Anyway to all you IE users, welcome back (and use Firefox!) :) Sorry it took so long for me to discover that there was a problem but I use Linux.

After a little looking around I found a Microsoft IE Bug explaining the issue. It looks like it’s an issue with putting the Java script in a Div container.Unfortunately I use them to display entries (such as this one) so that’s not easy to workaround.

RSS feeds for Individual Categories in Wordpress

BabyTuxAfter reading an article about blogging at what it originally was meant to be I decided to follow some of the “rules of blogging”. One of these is that you provide a weekly list of interesting links. I modified it slightly insofar as I am going to include my favorite lolcat picture of the week as I find them really funny.

Unfortunately I am subscribed to PlanetILUG a site which gathers Linux related blogs from Ireland and some of the people subscribed didn’t want to see this images each week.

So the solution was to create a feed for my Linux category only so that they will only see Linux related stuff from my website and nothing else. And as it turns out it was really easy!

All you have to do is is add &cat=n (where n is your category number) to your existing feed URL.

http://domainname.com/?feed=rss2&cat=n

Alternatively if you are using custom URLs you can simply click on the category and add the word feed to the URL.

http://domainname.com/category/maincategory/subcategory/feed
http://domainname.com/index.php/category/maincategory/feed

So now I can target different catergories of my site to different people.

Adsense YouTube Player

There is a new option on Google Adsense which allows you to embed videos into your site. It picks up on the content of your site and chooses relevant videos. I’m interested to she how accurate it can be so I have embedded it below.

Back Playing Hurling

Started back hurling training again last week. Really enjoyed it. Not a bad as I used to be I think, perhaps it’s because I have contact lenses now. Playing hurling with glasses underneath the helmet is definitely a drawback.

Not sure what position I’d like to play yet. Probably Right Corner Forward.

I set up my Technorati Profile today. For those who don’t know it is a site that notifies you when someone links to your blog and other such useful services. It also allows you to create alist of your favourite blogs and updates others when your site is updated. Plus much more useful blog related stuff.

Google Earth Flight Simulator

Downloaded the latest version of Google Earth today (version 4.2) and it turns out it has a hidden Flight Simulator! Cool or what. Just press Ctrl + Alt + A and off you go. You get to pick from two different planes.

You can find a list of commands on the Google Earth help page

Anyway I took it for a test flight over Cork and it was pretty cool. Takes a little getting used to though. But the “Start from current position” option is very useful.

Block Flash Ads from Websites

Found the best Firefox extension ever today. These days sites have more and more flash ads which are really annoying and distracting because they flash and scroll images and draw your eye away from the content. It makes reading a site very difficult and I have often closed a site in frustration because it is so difficult to read. For example the new Irish Independent site was really getting on my nerves, but I am sure everyone knows a site which much more flash then my example.

However now I have installed Flashblock and what a difference it makes to my browsing. It replaces each flash component on a website with a play button you can use to play the flash if you want. It makes reading a website so much easier. Seriously try it out. I just hope websites begin to realise these flash ads are counterproductive and are possibly losing them visitors.
